About Us

Dee's Haven Parrot Rescue is licensed by the Department of Agriculture, registered with the State of Georgia and an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Our goal is to find the perfect home for each parrot that comes into our care.  There is someone special for every bird and that's what we believe.

Just a little personal information so you know who we are.

My name is Donna.  I'm the mother of a beautiful and wonderful daughter, a fantastic and unique son, and Noni to 2 heaven sent granddaughters, ages 8 and 6.

I was born in Georgia and after quite a bit of traveling around am back in Georgia.  I am a paralegal by profession.  I would love to be home full time with the birds and hope someday to be able to.

My husband is Jon.  He is originally from Ohio and has traveled extensively across the US and is a painter by trade.  He's lucky enough to be home with the birds and they are lucky to have him here.  He keeps the cages clean and makes toys for our birds.  He has custom outfitted cages for birds that have issues of all kinds.  He is a genius at figuring out how to make life better for the birds at Dee's Haven.

I started this rescue out of my love for exotic birds and soon Jon fell in love with the coming of Talus, a Congo African Grey.  There are so many birds that need a home, older birds and birds with issues.  Breeding just increases the problem.

We have our personal birds and cannot imagine what life was like before them. I've been to other rescues and seen all the birds that need love and homes. It breaks my heart to see even one bird that doesn't have their own person.

We decided that we would do whatever we could to make sure even one parrot has a loving home, even if it was here with us.

Every day is an adventure with our flock. It's never quiet, watching TV or talking on the phone at times is difficult. The broom and vacuum cleaner go constantly. Food and toys fly everywhere. Every single day is filled with love and trust, laughter and happiness. Every day you look into their eyes and know their lives are a little better and hopefully happier than they were is worth everything.

 OBJECTIVES

Dee's Haven seeks to improve the quality of life for all parrots by:

  • Provide educational materials regarding care and needs of parrots
  • Facilitate adoption for parrots that need a new home
  • Help parrots who outlive their guardians find a new home
  • Find homes for neglected or unwanted parrots
  • Support better avian education
  • Advocate standards of care for breeders, pet stores, sanctuaries and rescues
  • Promote adoption of parrots rather than supporting breeding of parrots

We do not buy, sell or breed birds!!

MISSION STATEMENT

To take in unwanted, neglected/abused and/or homeless parrots and give them a chance at a loving, thriving and fulfilling life.

To rehabilitate those parrots that can be rehabilitated and place them into permanent homes or to provide a nurturing and loving home to any parrot that is unsuitable for adoption.

Provide education and educational resources for all parrot owners and potential owners regarding the care and well-being of parrots.

If a bird will not receive the same or better care in an adoptive home than it does with us, it will not be adopted.

Everyone goes into a pet store and sees a baby bird and falls in love. They are so sweet and cuddly. They snuggle against you and make cute little sounds. BUT, they don't always stay that way and stores or breeders don't tell you that. The sweet, cuddly baby you bring home today is going to go through a "terrible twos" stage; they are going to go through puberty; they are going to go through hormonal periods. They can become aggressive and difficult to handle. They can become cage aggressive, person aggressive and toy aggressive.

They can become ill very quickly. Remember, in the wild if a bird shows signs of weakness it is usually killed by the flock. By the time you realize your bird is ill, it can be seriously ill. Don't ever put off taking your bird to an avian vet if you feel something is wrong. Sometimes only 1 day is the difference in whether your bird lives or not.

They can scream for no apparent reason, sometimes for hours, sometimes loud enough to make you think your ears will bleed.

Then, there is nothing like looking into those eyes and realizing they trust you and love you. They count on you to protect and care for them. You are their flock. You are their mate they think at times. You have work, family, hobbies and outside activities--they have you.
